A Snapshot of the University of Newcastle

Some background on the city of Newcastle from which the University gets its name.

• Newcastle is the second oldest city in Australia after Sydney.
• It has a population of around 134,000. It's safe and friendly, and it offers you everything a big modern city can - without the hassles.
• It sits facing a beautiful working harbour and is surrounded by fabulous beaches. In fact it's one of the few cities in the world where you can walk to the surf from the CBD!
• Newcastle is part of the Hunter region (population around 540,000) and it's home to some of Australia's finest vineyards, a great mountain range called The Wattagans that's ideal for bushwalking, camping and horseriding.
• There are also rivers and lakes for canoeing and sailing (Lake Macquarie is Australia's largest seaboard lake) and not far away there's the beautiful area of Port Stephens where the water is unbelievably clear and where dolphins drop by regularly as they cruise up and down the coast.

A Bit About The University.

• We have two major campuses. The largest is Callaghan, 12km from the centre of Newcastle. The other is at Ourimbah on the Central Coast, halfway between Newcastle and Sydney. There is also a campus in the Newcastle CBD comprising the Graduate School of Business, the Newcastle Legal Centre and the Faculty of Music and Conservatorium.
• Our total student population is just under 22,000.
• Currently we rank in the top 10 Australian universities for our high quality research output.
• We offer over 150 graduate and postgraduate programs including most of the professional degree programs such as Architecture, Law, Medicine, Engineering, Teaching, Surveying, Social Work, Science, and Nursing. As well, we offer a vast array of courses in disciplines such as Computing, Fine Art, Modern Languages, Classics, History, Mathematics, Economics, Business, Nutrition and Dietetics, Sociology and Anthropology, Philosophy, Communications, and Tourism and Hospitality, to name just a few.
• We operate the largest single site accommodation complex of any university in Australia. There are close to 1,000 students living on the Callaghan campus in three traditional halls of residence and one new motel style complex.
• All our students are given their own university email account.
• We enjoy fantastic sporting facilities. The Forum Sports and Aquatic Centre houses a state of the art 50m indoor heated pool, a 18m climbing wall (one of the highest in Australia), a fully equipped gymnasium, two martial arts/aerobics studios and two competition indoor courts for sports such as basketball and volleyball.
