Australia Student Accommodation – Legal Protection
May 19, 2010
If you’re a student in Australia, you’re likely going to need a place to live. But how do you make sure you don’t get ripped off by a landlord? In Australia there are various laws that protect the rights of all students when they access student accommodation.
These laws cover everyone, including international students. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that the laws don’t cover you just because you are not an Australian citizen – you have the same rights and protections as everyone else living in Australia.
The student accommodation legal protections cover a variety of things including protecting students from:
- false advertising
- stealing your money
- misusing your bond
- physical intimidation or assault
- poor quality accommodation
- unsafe living conditions
- lying and cheating
The exact laws protecting the rights of students in accommodation will vary from state to state. Here is a link to the Ministerial Council on Consumer Affairs, which is the overall government site for consumer affairs. Go there first, and then enter your city or state into the search box.
Chances are you won’t have to make use of the legal protection provided by the consumer affairs office. Most landlords are honest people and will work with you to resolve any problems that might come up.
But if you do run into a bad landlord, or you simply have questions about your rights and legal protections, don’t be afraid to contact the Ministerial Council on Consumer Affairs. The service is confidential and experienced staff will advise you on what you can do.
If English is not your first language, don’t worry: the Ministerial Council on Consumer Affairs office provides free interpreting help in many languages, including:
- Arabic
- Russian
- Vietnamese
- Chinese
Remember – you are not at the mercy of bad landlords and there are people to help you if you run into problems. Let your friends know about it if they have any problems with their student housing.
