University of New England

October 9, 2008

The University of New England (UNE) is a unique Australian university, and is in the enviable position of being able to boast an excellent international reputation as well as being a leader in research and academic innovation. International students who attend UNE consistently cite the high level of interaction with teaching and academic staff, together with the passion of researchers at the University as a large part of the reason they rate their time at UNE so highly. UNE is proud of its heritage and status as one of Australia’s oldest universities and is committed to maintaining the tradition of excellence for which it is renowned.

Distance Education

In addition to UNE’s on-campus degrees, an extensive range of programs are also offered via distance education. UNE has an outstanding reputation for its commitment to distance education, and for setting standards for academic learning across the world. The majority of UNE degrees are available to international students via distance education, including postgraduate research degrees.

Distance education allows students to arrange study around work and family commitments. Students understanding of subjects are enhanced by access to online units, CDROMs, DVDs, text books and other reference material. Support and communication between lecturers and students is available via email, online discussions and chat, telephone, and on campus intensive schools. UNE provides web-based facilities which allow you to send questions, submit assignments, order library books, check your grades and access other resources, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

UNE has a long history of teaching in this mode so our distance education programs are successful because we understand the problems and needs of off-campus students and provide extensive support systems to overcome those challenges.

Specialist Distance Programs

UNE offers a number of programs only via distance education including postgraduate Business and Accounting degrees through the Graduate School of Business (http://www.une.edu.au/gsb/), and specialist degrees such as the Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) (http://www.une.edu.au/bcss/linguistics/maal.php) and the new Master of Applied Theatre Studies (http://www.une.edu.au/arts/theatre/maplthst_info.php) in addition to the full range of UNE Courses. See this brochure for a complete list of degrees offered via distance education to international students:

UNE’s Achievements

UNE achieved the top rating (five stars) for all three primary categories of students’ ‘educational experience’ in The Good Universities Guide for 2009. UNE has received the Guide’s top rating in this regard for nine of the ten years from 2000 to 2009 – a record unmatched by any other university. Surveyed graduates gave UNE the maximum five stars for ‘teaching quality’, ‘graduate satisfaction’ and in the ‘overall graduate rating’, which is a resounding endorsement by graduates of the unique Australian living and learning environment offered by UNE.

UNE has continually been awarded for excellence in university teaching by the Carrick Citations, an initiative of the Australian Government. UNE received Citations for all eight nominees in 2008 in recognition of outstanding achievements in distance education, online learning, on-campus teaching, and the linkage of research and teaching.

UNE is listed in the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) 2007 rankings of World universities as one of the top 500 universities in the world, and one of the top 100 universities in Asia Pacific. UNE’s inclusion in these rankings confirms its place as one of the great teaching and learning universities in the world.

Teaching and Learning

An important part of UNE’s high quality academic experience is its commitment to teaching and learning. With one of the lowest staff-to-student ratios among Australian universities, UNE provides opportunities for students to interact more easily with classmates and academic staff promoting discussion and effective learning. This also applies to students studying via distance education, as academics and teaching staff are only an email, phone call or online bulletin board away – staff ensure that high levels of interaction take place with online discussions and forums, in addition to providing many multimedia materials (including podcasts) to distance education students.Having such close interaction develops students’ deeper understanding of their areas of study, while building strong peer support attitudes. Smaller class sizes also mean that students are not just numbers at UNE – many international students really appreciate that lecturers and academic staff know their names!

UNE’s continued outstanding reputation is reflected in the fact that over 75,000 people across the world hold UNE qualifications, many in senior positions across public and private sectors. These people are part of the illustrious UNE Alumni, and they form a strong part of UNE’s tradition and history. UNE Alumni is a continually expanding system which allows graduates of UNE to develop professional international networks, as well as keeps them up to date with the latest developments in their fields of study.

UNE is proud of its vigorous research. Staff and students are actively engaged in internationally recognised research across all academic fields. Our scholars and scientists have world-class reputations through their contributions to fields such as rural science, agricultural economics, law, educational administration, linguistics, archaeology, nursing and education.

UNE also has significant research opportunities across all faculties, both at Masters and PhD levels. With a wealth of research knowledge and supervisors, as well as close links with over 40 Collaborative Research Centres (CRC’s) based on campus, UNE offers international research students an outstanding higher education opportunity. For more information on our research strengths see here.
