What we do

The Centre for ELICOS delivers a range of English as a Second Language (ESL) programs to both migrant and international students.

Our areas of expertise include:

Migrant students can enrol in one semester full-time English courses. These courses are offered at different levels and their purpose is to prepare students to enter post-secondary education (TAFE or university) or to access the Australian workforce.

International full-fee paying students can enrol in intensive English language classes that are offered at six levels, ranging from elementary to advanced. There are nine intakes each year. The aim of these classes is to prepare students to enter mainstream courses at Box Hill Institute in a variety of areas including business, art and design, hospitality and tourism.

The English language sector in Australia has been developing in Australia since the late eighties and is acknowledged as one of the top English study destinations in the world with over 200 English language colleges and English language centres within Universities.

Many students come to Australia to not only learn English but to also take advantage of the high quality vocational training and university system.

Types of English Language Courses

English language proficiency is required for all higher education studies in Australia. Students can choose between General English, English for business, Cambridge Exam Preparation (PET, FCE, CAE,), IELTS Exam Preparation, English for Academic Purposes, TOEIC, English for Hospitality, High School Preparation, Study Tours, English Au Pair Programs, Work Experience English and Home stay English.

All new ELICOS colleges are required to be accredited by the National ELICOS Accreditation Scheme (NEAS), which was founded in 1990. This ensures that a high level of standards is maintained across the English learning sector and guarantees students are taught by qualified English teachers.

English language colleges are located in all of Australia’s major cities as well across the nation in the regional centers. Colleges are either private or government managed and may be part of a TAFE college, vocational provider or university.

Choosing an English college

When making your choice of English college you should research all your options beforehand including tuition fees, types of English courses that will suit your ongoing career or education, entry requirements, living costs, working visas, accommodation.

You need to think about the location of the college and the types of activities that can be undertaken nearby such as sightseeing, sports, major tourist attractions, shopping, surfing or whatever takes your fancy. It is a good idea to ensure you also research the background of the college and try and get previous students testimonials.

The Language Centre offers individuals a full range of courses, including General English, Business English, English for Further studies, Professional Communication and English for High School Preparation.

The EFS course prepares students for entry to undergraduate and postgraduate study.

On satisfactory completion of the course, students will have met English language entry requirements of La Trobe University.

Our reputation is based on our professional staff, care for students, up-to-date facilities, and continual re-investment in resources, facilities and staff development.

Our Melbourne campus is situated thirty-five minutes from dynamic Melbourne’s CBD.

The Centre is on a 200 hectare parkland University campus, where our students can join a rich life of study, sport and recreation.

You can study for any length of time from a minimum of 2 weeks. Our ELICOS programs offer you up to 30 hours of tuition per week – more than you need to fulfill your student visa obligations. You study 25 hours face-to-face with your class teacher and choose from a wide range of electives to suit your own study needs.

If you want to move to formal study and don’t want to take an IELTS test, you can take our popular EAP 1 program. If you successfully complete this program, you can get direct entry into one of our diploma or certificate programs without taking an IELTS or TOEFL test (you may need some other non-language qualifications to enter).

Another possibility is an ISLPR (International Second Language Proficiency Rating). Becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to IELTS, ISLPR testing is available on campus for direct entry into formal Southbank Institute programs as well as to many other tertiary institutions around Australia.

Pathways to University

Graduates of Southbank Institute programs may gain credit from Universities for their diploma or advanced diploma studies. We have built links with many universities to give you more options for further study.

The university links may allow you to:

* gain credit towards a university degree program after completing a Southbank Institute diploma
* acquire multiple qualifications at diploma and degree levels
* purchase a single visa package so that you do not need to reapply to the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) to complete further study in Australia
