In Australia school attendance is compulsory for students between the ages of 5 to 15 years old. The Australian school system is divided into the Primary school sector which encompasses Grades 1 to 6 and the Secondary school sector which covers grades 7 to 12.

The main subjects in Australian schools are English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Arts, Health and
Physical education. Most secondary students study specific subjects depending on their chosen career
pathway.

The Australian School year starts in January and continues to early December with 4 terms of approximately 12 weeks. All international students are required to undertake a test for English language proficiency before gaining entry to an Australian Primary or High School.

Students have holidays in between each school term that includes a long summer break. Generally School classes begin at 9 am and finish at 3.30 pm.

The states in Australia have different names for their final high school graduation which are as follows:

-Australian Capital Territory: ACT Year 12 Certificate
-New South Wales: Higher School Certificate (HSC)
-Northern Territories: Senior Secondary Studies Certificate
-Queensland: Queensland Senior Certificate (QSC)
-South Australia: South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE)
-Tasmania: Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE)
-Victoria: Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)
-Western Australia: Certificate of Secondary Education

On successfully completing Year 12, students are eligible for university entrance but they are not guaranteed a place into every course. Most Australian university courses are pen to students on a competitive basis. This applies to both Australian and international students..

International Baccalaureate

International students can also choose to undertake the International Baccalaureate which is an internationally recognised course with two versions available. The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Primary Years Baccalaureate Programme. Both courses are very good preparation for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

The campus pioneered the ‘twin school’ concept which offers all the advantages of single-sex education together with the advantages of co-educational social interaction.

International Students

Pittwater House not only welcomes fee paying overseas students it also participates in a regular programme of overseas trips and cultural exchanges.

To preserve the fundamental Australian culture of Pittwater House in its Northern Beaches situation the number of overseas students in the School does not exceed 20% of the student population.

Pittwater House offers the UNSW Foundation Year course primarily to overseas students and there is no cap on overseas enrolments in these programmes.

The Pittwater House Schools Campus

The Pittwater House Schools campus covers four hectares and is bounded by Westmoreland Avenue, Parkes Road and South Creek Road in the suburb of Collaroy.

Visitor parking is available at 70 South Creek Road or alternatively on the streets surrounding the campus.

Facilities

The School is situated on two campuses, at Kew in the Eastern suburbs 8 kms from the CBD, which caters for students from 3-year-old kindergarten to Year 12 (Victorian Certificate of Education and International Baccalaureate) and at Donvale, 30 kms from the CBD, catering for 3-year-old kindergarten to Year 6, after which all students transfer to the Kew campus.

A 14 ha sports complex at Bulleen, also in the Eastern suburbs, provides extensive facilities including ovals, athletics tracks, a gymnasium and indoor swimming and diving pools. The School also has an Outdoor Education facility in Gippsland in Eastern Victoria, Camp Toonallook.
