Description: Swinburne University English Language Centre provides ELICOS programs for
international students who intend to study in Australia or wish to improve their English
for social or business purposes.
The centre is a member of English Australia and UECA and is accredited by NEAS to ensure the highest standards are upheld.
A variety of programs including General English and English for Academic Purposes are offered so that students may extend their English skills to the required level. For entry to all TAFE, Undergraduate & Postgraduate courses (except AGSE programs) directly from ELICOS, students must achieve a recommendation from English for Academic Purposes (Level 2) to the level they require to enter their formal course.
The study skills in English which are developed include:
- Reading strategies
- Writing strategies
- Interpretations of graphic information
- Note-taking from both lecturers and written texts
- Research and library techniques
- Seminar and tutorial strategies
- Language specific to business, engineering, science and computing
- Computer based skills
The Swinburne English Language Centre is located on the Hawthorn campus, within a
cosmopolitan residential district, which is about 10 minutes by train from the CBD.
Shops, restaurants and parklands are within easy walking distance.
Swinburne English Language Centre can offer a variety of group Study Tour options.
We are able to customise each Study Tour based on the interests and requirements of
each group. Study tours are not just about study. They are also about discovering a
new country and having adventures. There are hundreds of exciting activities and
tours to be enjoyed in and around Melbourne. These activities can be packaged within
a Study Tour program.
Facilities:
- Classes - 25 hours per week between 8.30am - 5.30pm
- Class size - Average of 14 students per group
- Facilities include Language lab/multi media lab, Independent Learning Centre, fully equipped modern class rooms
- Friendly, experienced, post-graduate qualified ESL/EFL teachers
- Print, audio, video and computer based materials are used in all programs
- Reports and certificates are issued at the end of each program
- A program is conducted by bi-lingual staff from the International Student Unit prior to the commencement of classes. This orientation program provides information on banking, housing, transport and social activities to help students adjust to living in Melbourne.
- During the orientation program students will be interviewed and tested to determine the appropriate course level.
Services: Airport reception, on-campus health service, educational and welfare counselling, library, computer laboratories, internet access, educational and careers advice, on campus accommodation officer, homestay placements, on-campus accommodation, local and interstate tours, social and sport clubs, sports centre staffed with qualified instructors.
Entry Criteria: None for General English but students applying for our EAP programs must be at 'upper intermediate' level.
Fees: $320 per week
