Description: The Study Abroad program at Southern Cross University offers you the opportunity to study for one semester or one year at an internationally-recognised university situated at Australia's best address — the north coast of sub-tropical New South Wales. Choose from a wide range of academic subjects and enjoy the nearby rainforests and unspoiled beaches. The Study Abroad program has been established for over 10 years, and attracts students from Europe and the Americas. The limited places in the program help ensure a truly Australian experience.
Facilities: Accommodation, in a range of housing options, is guaranteed. All students benefit from a full range of modern library, computer, laboratory, studio, workshop and classroom facilities. There is also a fitness centre, a gymnasium, and a large number of social and sporting clubs on campus.
Services: The International Office at the University provides an outstanding level of support to international students. You are made to feel welcome from the time that you arrive and are encouraged to consider the Office as your second home. Services include: arrival pick-up; accommodation placement; academic and non-academic support; activities and excursions; mail collection service; free fax service for liaison with Study Abroad advisers; free coffee, tea and microwave oven access; and free Internet access.
Fees Include: Tuition for 4 units per semester, and an excursion. Accommodation costs are additional, approximately $1800-$2000 Australian per semester.
Dates: Semester 1: February-June. Semester 2: July-November.
Highlights: A popular unit with Study Abroad students is Outdoor Education, which is based on the concept of experiential learning. It introduces students to a variety of outdoor education activities and settings, making the best possible use of the spectacular environments that surround the university. The Study Abroad excursion, which is included in your fees, is a 4WD camping trip that is offered each semester. Destinations include Central Australia (airfare not included), Great Keppel Island - the southernmost point of the Great Barrier Reef, and an Aboriginal camp where students cut and make their own didgeridoos. Study Abroad students can enrol in most of the units of study on offer at the University. Some of these, such as contemporary music and naturopathy, are unique to Southern Cross, while others are in areas where the university has particular expertise, such as indigenous studies, coastal and environmental management and tourism.
Location Features: The region boasts 6 World Heritage-listed rainforests, idyllic beaches, and Australia's leading backpacker destination, Byron Bay.
Program Fees: $6,500 per semester/$13,000 per year. (Fees are in Australian dollars.)
