Australian High School information for prospective overseas students. There are approximately 20,000 overseas students currently enrolled at Australian primary and secondary schools. The High School curriculum encourage community involvement and focuses on the importance of education as a student moves towards becoming a part of the workforce.
In Australia school attendance is compulsory for students between the ages of 5 to 15 years old. The Australian school system is divided into the Primary school sector which encompasses Grades 1 to 6 and the Secondary school sector which covers grades 7 to 12.
The main subjects in Australian schools are English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Arts, Health and
Physical education. Most secondary students study specific subjects depending on their chosen career
pathway.
The Australian School year starts in January and continues to early December with 4 terms of approximately 12 weeks. All international students are required to undertake a test for English language proficiency before gaining entry to an Australian Primary or High School.
Students have holidays in between each school term that includes a long summer break. Generally School classes begin at 9 am and finish at 3.30 pm.
The states in Australia have different names for their final high school graduation which are as follows:
-Australian Capital Territory: ACT Year 12 Certificate
-New South Wales: Higher School Certificate (HSC)
-Northern Territories: Senior Secondary Studies Certificate
-Queensland: Queensland Senior Certificate (QSC)
-South Australia: South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE)
-Tasmania: Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE)
-Victoria: Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)
-Western Australia: Certificate of Secondary Education
On successfully completing Year 12, students are eligible for university entrance but they are not guaranteed a place into every course. Most Australian university courses are pen to students on a competitive basis. This applies to both Australian and international students..
International Baccalaureate
International students can also choose to undertake the International Baccalaureate which is an internationally recognised course with two versions available. The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Primary Years Baccalaureate Programme. Both courses are very good preparation for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
